Signs of a blocked waste pipe

Waste pipes carry water from sinks, basins, baths, showers, dishwashers and washing machines to the soil stack or an outside gully. When one starts to block, water drains slowly, plugholes gurgle and appliances may leave water behind or show a drain error.

Outside, you may see the gully under the kitchen window overflowing or coated in grease when the sink or washing machine empties. Smells from plugholes, water backing up into a second sink or basin, or a damp patch below a pipe joint can all point to a restriction in the waste pipe.

How waste pipe blockages are cleared

Waste pipes are narrower than underground drains, so they block more easily with grease, food waste, lint, hair and soap. Clearing usually starts at the trap, then works along the pipe with a hand or powered drain rod from the nearest access point. Where grease has coated the inside of the pipe, jetting may be suitable if the pipework allows it.

If the blockage is in the outside gully, that is cleared and flushed separately. Pipes with poor fall, sharp bends or long horizontal runs are prone to blocking again. We will point this out if we see it, so you can decide whether any pipework changes are worth making.

What happens on the visit

We start by working out which fittings share the blocked pipe and where it discharges. That may mean looking under sinks, behind bath panels or kickboards, and at the gullies and stack outside. We will ask about connected appliances and anything that has gone down recently.

After clearing, we run water through each connected fitting and appliance waste where possible and check the joints for leaks. We will explain what caused the restriction, whether it is likely to return and any simple changes that may help, such as a sink strainer or keeping fat out of the sink.

Questions about waste pipe blockages

Why does my kitchen sink waste keep blocking?

Fat, oil and grease from cooking cool and harden inside the pipe, then catch food scraps and coffee grounds. Over time the pipe narrows until it blocks. Wiping pans with kitchen roll before washing, using a sink strainer and putting fat in the bin rather than the sink all help.

Can a washing machine cause a waste pipe blockage?

Yes. Lint, fibres, coins and detergent residue can build up in the standpipe or shared waste, especially where it joins the kitchen sink pipe. If the machine leaves water in the drum or the sink fills when it empties, the waste is likely restricted. Check the machine's own filter too, as that can be a separate fault.

Is it safe to pour boiling water down a blocked waste?

Hot water may soften a small grease build-up, but boiling water can soften or distort some plastic waste pipes and joints, and can crack a ceramic sink if poured straight in. Hot tap water is a safer option. If the sink is already full, do not add more water.

Who is responsible for waste pipes in a flat?

Pipework that serves only your flat is usually your responsibility, or your landlord's if you rent. Shared stacks and drains are often the freeholder's or managing agent's to look after. Check your lease or tenancy agreement, and tell us who is responsible when you contact us so access can be arranged.
