Signs your shower drain is blocked
The usual first sign is water pooling around your feet while you shower and taking several minutes to drain away afterwards. You may notice a gurgle from the plughole, a musty or drainy smell, or a grey film left on the tray. In a wet room, water may spread beyond the gully area or sit in the channel drain.
If the shower drains normally on its own but backs up when the bath, basin or toilet is used, the restriction is probably in the shared waste pipe or the drain beyond it rather than the shower trap.
How a shower drain is cleared
Most shower blockages are hair bound together with soap, shampoo and conditioner residue. Clearing them can mean removing the waste cover and trap, cleaning out the build-up and running a flexible tool along the waste pipe. Wet-room gullies and linear channels usually have a removable grille and hair catcher that need the same treatment.
If the restriction is further along, the pipe may need rodding from another access point or clearing where it meets the soil stack or outside drain. Some shower waste pipes run under floors or behind tiling with limited access. We will talk that through before any work that would disturb finishes.
What happens on the visit
We look at the tray or wet-room floor, the waste and the trap, and ask how long the problem has been building. We check whether other fittings on the same pipe are slow, which helps show where the blockage sits.

Questions about blocked showers
Can I use a chemical drain cleaner in my shower?
It is best avoided. Caustic cleaners can damage some acrylic trays, sealants and plastic waste fittings, and they rarely dissolve a mat of hair. A hair catcher does more good. If you have already poured something in, tell us what it was before work starts.
How can I stop the shower blocking again?
Fit a hair catcher over the waste and empty it often. Remove and rinse the trap every few weeks if your waste allows it. Running hot water for a minute after showering helps move soap residue along. Avoid rinsing paint, grout, plaster or pet hair down the shower.
Is a blocked wet room different from a shower tray?
The principle is the same, but a wet room relies on the floor falling towards the gully or channel. If water spreads across the floor even when the gully is clear, the floor fall or tile layout may be the issue rather than a blockage. We will tell you if that seems to be the case.
Will the shower tray need to come out?
Usually not. Most blockages can be reached through the waste in the tray or the gully grille. Lifting a tray or opening a panel would only be considered if the trap or pipe beneath cannot be reached any other way, and we would discuss that with you first.
