Signs scale is building up in your drains
Scale builds up gradually, so the signs are easy to miss at first. Drains may run more slowly over months, block more often than they used to, or need clearing again soon after jetting. Older properties with cast-iron soil pipes and drains are particularly prone, as the inside of the pipe corrodes and forms a rough, hard crust.
Hard water can also leave limescale in waste pipes, and grease can harden into a scale-like layer in kitchen drains. A CCTV survey showing rough, narrowed pipe walls is the clearest sign that descaling may be worth considering.
How drain descaling is done
Descaling uses rotating cutting and descaling tools, fed into the pipe on a flexible drive, to grind hard deposits off the pipe walls. The loosened material is then flushed through, often with water jetting. Tools are chosen to suit the pipe's size and material.
Descaling is often done before drain lining, because a liner needs a clean surface to bond to. It can also be a job on its own where the pipe is sound but restricted by build-up. Where corrosion has thinned the pipe wall too far, descaling may not be advisable, and repair or replacement would be discussed instead.
What happens on the visit
Descaling normally follows a CCTV inspection, so we know where the scale is, how thick it is and what condition the pipe is in. On the day, we set up at the nearest access point, which may be a manhole, rodding eye or access cap on the soil pipe, or indoors for an internal stack.

What is the difference between descaling and jetting?
Jetting uses high-pressure water to wash out soft material such as grease, silt and debris. Descaling uses rotating cutting tools to remove hard deposits such as rust, scale and hardened grease that water alone cannot shift. Many jobs use both, with jetting to flush out what descaling loosens.
Do I need a CCTV survey before descaling?
In most cases, yes. A survey shows where the scale is, how much the pipe has narrowed and whether the pipe wall is strong enough to be descaled. Without it, there is a risk of working on a pipe that needs repair instead. If you already have recent survey footage, send it to us.
Can cast-iron soil pipes inside the house be descaled?
