When a tanker may be needed

A tanker is usually needed when there is more liquid than rods or jetting can deal with on their own. Common situations include a manhole or inspection chamber that is full and not draining, a flooded yard or basement after a blockage, or a sump that needs emptying before work can start.

Large grease interceptors, silted chambers and long runs packed with sludge can also call for suction to remove the contents before the cause can be found.

How tanker work is carried out

A suction hose from the tanker draws liquid, silt and sludge out of the chamber or pit. Lowering the level means the blockage and the pipework around it can be seen and reached.

Tanker work is often paired with other methods. Jetting can loosen build-up while the tanker removes it, and once the chamber is clear, rods or a CCTV camera may be used to find out why it filled up. Removing liquid alone does not always deal with the cause, so we will explain what else may be needed.

What happens on the visit

Access matters for tanker work, so we will ask about it first: driveway width, parking restrictions, low gates and how far the chamber is from where the vehicle can stop. Photos of the route help.

On arrival we confirm the route for the hose, lift the cover and remove the liquid. Where needed, we then clear the blockage and run water through to check flow. Before we leave, we explain what we found and any next step, such as a survey or repair.

Questions about tanker services

What details help you plan tanker work?

Tell us the postcode, what the liquid is if you know, roughly how much there is, where the chamber or pit is, and what access is like from the road. Photos of the chamber and the route to it are very useful.

Can a tanker reach a chamber in the back garden?

Often the hose can be run through a side passage or garden, but it depends on the distance and the route. Describe the layout or send photos so we can discuss whether it is workable before the visit.

Should I keep using water while the chamber is full?

Use as little water as possible and avoid flushing toilets that drain to that chamber, as extra water can make it overflow. Keep children and pets away from any open or overflowing chamber.

Do I need to be there?

Someone usually needs to be on site to give access, show us where the chambers are and move cars or other obstructions from the route. Tell us if that is difficult and we can talk about other arrangements.

Will emptying the chamber fix the blockage?

Not on its own. Emptying the chamber lowers the level so the problem can be reached. The blockage may then need rodding or jetting, and a CCTV survey can show whether there is damage in the pipe.
