Signs a grease trap needs attention

Kitchen sinks that drain more slowly during or after a busy service are often the first sign. You may also notice a stale, fatty smell near the trap or the kitchen gully, gurgling from sink wastes, or water sitting in a floor gully when it would normally clear.

If you lift the lid, a thick layer of solid fat on the surface or a build-up of food waste at the bottom suggests the unit is close to full. Grease that has passed through can also show up as a white, waxy coating in the next chamber outside.

How grease traps and interceptors are cleaned

The method depends on the unit. A small under-sink trap can usually be emptied and cleaned by hand, with baffles and inner surfaces scraped clean. A larger below-ground interceptor may need the contents removed with suction from a tanker before the chamber can be cleaned.

If grease has already settled in the pipework beyond the trap, jetting the drain run may be suitable to clear it. We will talk you through what we found and whether the connecting drains need any further work.

What happens on the visit

We start by finding the trap or interceptor and checking the lid and access. We will ask how the kitchen is used and when the unit was last cleaned. Water into the trap should be stopped while the work is done, so it helps to agree a time outside your busiest period.

After cleaning, we run water through and check that it flows on to the next chamber. Before we leave, we explain the condition of the unit, anything we noticed in the drains, and whether a survey or planned visits would be worth discussing.

Questions about grease trap cleaning

How often should a grease trap be cleaned?

It depends on the size of the unit, the menu and how much cooking the kitchen does. A busy fryer kitchen fills a trap far sooner than a cafe serving cold food. We can look at the level of build-up and discuss a sensible interval for your kitchen.

Can I clear grease with hot water or drain chemicals?

Hot water can move grease further down the pipe, where it cools and sets again. Some drain chemicals can also damage pipework or seals. Scraping plates into the bin and keeping cooking oil out of sinks makes a bigger difference.

Does the kitchen need to close while the trap is cleaned?

Water should not run into the trap during cleaning, so sinks and dishwashers connected to it need to be off for the duration. Tell us your opening times and quieter periods when you get in touch and we can discuss timing.

What should I tell you when I call?

Let us know the type of premises, where the trap is, its rough size if known, when it was last cleaned and whether water is backing up anywhere. Photos of the unit and the lid sent by WhatsApp are useful.

Do homes have grease traps?

Most homes do not. Cooking fat still causes many household blockages, though. Let fat cool, wipe pans with kitchen roll and put the waste in the bin rather than down the sink.
