Signs of a blocked soil vent pipe

The soil vent pipe, or soil stack, is the large vertical pipe that carries waste from toilets and other fittings down to the underground drain. Its top is usually open above the roofline to vent the system. When the pipe or its vent is blocked, toilets may flush slowly, gurgle or leave less water in the pan than usual.

Other signs include sewage smells inside or near the house, plugholes that bubble when the toilet is flushed, and water levels in traps that drop after another fitting drains. A blockage lower down can also cause leaks at joints.

How a soil stack is unblocked

Stack blockages are usually toilet paper, wipes or sanitary products caught at a bend or junction, or debris such as leaves or a bird's nest at the open vent. Where the stack has an access cap or inspection door, rods can be worked through it. Otherwise it may be cleared from the drain below or the vent at the top.

Reaching the top of the stack can mean working at height, and we will discuss how the vent can be reached safely before any work there is agreed. Some homes have an air admittance valve inside instead of an open vent. If that valve has failed, it may need replacing rather than unblocking.

What happens on the visit

We follow the route of the stack inside and out, check any access points and lift the manhole closest to where the stack enters the ground. Whether that chamber is clear tells us whether the problem is in the stack or further along the drain.

Once it is cleared, we flush the toilets and run the other connected fittings to check the stack drains and vents properly, with no gurgling or loss of water from the traps. We will explain the cause and anything else worth attention, such as a cracked joint, a missing vent cage or a failing valve.

Questions about soil vent pipe unblocking

How do I know if the problem is the soil stack or the drain?

Look at which fittings are affected. If upstairs toilets gurgle or flush slowly while ground-floor fittings work, the stack is a likely suspect. If the lowest toilet or an outside manhole is backing up, the blockage is more likely in the underground drain. Seeing whether the nearest manhole is full also helps show which.

Can I clear the vent at the top of the pipe myself?

It is not worth the risk if it means climbing onto a roof or working from a ladder near the eaves. Soil stacks are often high and next to fragile roof edges or guttering. Tell us how high the vent is and whether scaffolding or other access is already in place.

Are smells from the soil vent pipe normal?

A slight smell near the top of the vent outside can be normal, as venting is its job. Smells inside the house are not. They can come from a blocked vent, a failed air admittance valve, a dried-out trap in a rarely used fitting or a leaking joint. Running water into unused fittings is a simple first check.

What is an air admittance valve?

It is a one-way valve, often fitted where a soil stack ends inside a loft or boxing, that lets air into the pipe without letting smells out. If it sticks or fails, toilets can gurgle and traps can empty. It is a different fault from a blockage and may need replacing.
