Signs of a blocked toilet or sink
A toilet that fills close to the rim before slowly draining, or needs several flushes to clear, usually has a blockage in the pan outlet or the pipe just beyond it. A sink or basin that drains slowly, smells or gurgles is often restricted at the trap or in the waste pipe below.
Look at what else is happening. If only one fitting is affected, the problem is likely to be local to it. If the toilet backs up when the bath empties, or the kitchen sink and an outside gully both fill, the restriction is probably further down the drain and needs a different approach.
How toilets and sinks are unblocked
For a toilet, the work may start with a plunger or a toilet auger worked through the pan. Sink and basin blockages can often be cleared by removing and cleaning the trap, then rodding the waste pipe if the build-up continues further along.
If the fitting itself is clear but water still will not run away, we check the soil stack, the outside gully and the manhole chambers. Where an object such as a toy, phone or toilet block is stuck in the pan, the toilet may need to be lifted to retrieve it, which we will discuss with you first.
What happens on the visit
We ask what has gone down the toilet or sink recently, whether anything has been tried already and which other fittings are affected. We then check the fitting, the trap and the pipework we can reach, and lift nearby manhole covers if the drain may be involved.
It helps to clear the floor around the toilet or the cupboard under the sink before we start. After clearing, we flush the toilet or run the taps several times to check the water drains normally. We will explain the cause if we found it and suggest anything that could help stop it happening again.

Questions about blocked toilets and sinks
Can I use bleach or a chemical unblocker on a blocked toilet?
Bleach does not clear blockages. Chemical unblockers may soften a small build-up in a sink waste, but they rarely shift a toilet blockage and can splash back when the pan is full. Never mix different products, as some combinations give off harmful fumes. Tell us if you have used anything.
Who should arrange the work if I rent the property?
Landlords are usually responsible for keeping drains and toilets in working order, but a tenant may be responsible if the blockage was caused by something they put down it. Check your tenancy agreement. We can deal with either the tenant or the landlord, as long as access is agreed.
What should not go down a toilet?
Only toilet paper and human waste. Wet wipes, including those labelled flushable, nappies, sanitary products, cotton buds, kitchen roll and cooking fat are common causes of toilet blockages. Wipes do not break down like toilet paper.
Why does my sink keep blocking?
Kitchen sinks usually block with fat, grease and food waste that set inside the trap and pipe. Bathroom basins tend to collect hair, soap and toothpaste. If clearing the trap only helps for a short while, the build-up may be further along the waste pipe or in the outside gully.
Should I keep plunging if it is not working?
A few firm plunges are fine. If the water level does not drop, stop. Repeated plunging and flushing can push the blockage further in or make the pan overflow. Turn off the cistern isolation valve if there is one, leave the toilet alone and tell us what you have tried.
